Saturday morning was bright and warm. Lisa stared out of the window at the glorious sunshine, yawning and stretching. This morning she had lain in bed reading and intermittently snoozing. Finally, at ten o’clock, she had risen to make herself a coffee and toast slathered with raspberry jam. She perched on a kitchen stool, leaning on the breakfast bar to chew her warm toast and simultaneously read her book. It was lovely not to have to rush off to work. Lisa realised that it had been months since she had a Saturday off. She planned on having a relaxing day and then she was going to get ready for Emma’s hen night.

As if on cue, Lisa’s phone beeped, an incoming message from Emma flashed on the screen. It informed Lisa that she would be at her flat at six thirty, then they would go straight to the Chinese. Lisa smiled, her stomach bubbling with excitement. She turned the hot tap on, and water gushed out in a stream, splashing her and the spider plants on the window sill. Now all she needed to make the day perfect was a text from Gabe. She wondered whether she should message him but decided against the idea. After all, a woman has to play a little hard to get. She thought again about that delicious kiss, and a shiver ran down her spine.

The sound of the letterbox rattling interrupted her daydream. It was the morning newspaper and a handful of letters dangling precariously from the mail box. Lisa scanned the paper, there was no mention of the lake murder, still no progress she thought with a sad sigh. Lisa opened the letters, gulping at the price of the T.V. license and quickly tearing up a double-glazing flyer. She padded softly back into the kitchen, flicking the radio on as she did, humming along with the music as she emptied the bin and replaced it with a fresh liner.

For the rest of the morning, she busied herself with domestic chores. Her online shopping arrived on time, packed neatly and ready to put away. At mid-day, she made herself a healthy sandwich, accompanied by a not so healthy bag of crisps and a creamy fromage frais type dessert. Lisa was digging the spoon round in the bottom of the pot when her phone beeped. She was surprised and elated to receive a text from Gabe. Okay, it was pretty basic and simple, a ‘hi, how r u?’ hardly signalled the beginning of a great love affair, but it was a start, she thought with some satisfaction. Rapidly she keyed in a reply ‘good thanks hope u r ok xx’ she fired it off into phone cyberspace. Five minutes later, she hadn’t received a reply, so she wrote another message, ‘had a really great time with you last night xx’. Lisa washed up her lunch and breakfast dishes and was drying her hands when an incoming reply beeped, ‘fine ta, have a nice time at the hen night’.
